Historic Rioja Trademarks Head to International Auction — What Trade Buyers Need to Know
The insolvency sale of Federico Paternina, Lagunilla, Marqués de la Concordia and Rioja Santiago offers a rare look at how Rioja brand equity is valued — and what it signals for the broader market.
A portfolio of some of Rioja’s most commercially established trademarks — Federico Paternina, Lagunilla, Marqués de la Concordia and Rioja Santiago — will go to international online auction between July 27 and 29, as part of insolvency proceedings affecting the Marqués de la Concordia group. The sale, managed by IAG Auction, is notable for what it does and does not include: no vineyards, no production facilities, no physical assets. Only the brands.
That distinction matters for trade professionals. A trademark-only transaction of this scale is unusual in the Spanish wine sector, and the fact that the brands are being sold independently of production infrastructure reflects how the wine industry values — and monetises — commercial recognition, importer relationships, and export channel access separately from winemaking capacity.
“Acquiring an established brand can speed up commercial positioning far more quickly than launching a new label.”
— José María Méndez, Project Manager Director, IAG Auction
The portfolio generated normalised historical sales of approximately 18.49 million euros in Rioja between 2019 and 2021. Federico Paternina led with roughly 52% of that volume; Lagunilla accounted for close to 29%. Critically, 41% of sales were export-driven — with Nordic countries representing 27.72% of export revenue and Central Europe 21.93%. For any buyer evaluating the lot, those are existing distribution relationships and established shelf presence in markets where Spanish wine has strong footing.
The auction is explicitly targeted at wine groups, trade operators, investment funds and international companies. Assets transfer free of encumbrances, and the valuation methodology is based on normalised historical sales and current market conditions — giving prospective bidders a transparent benchmark rather than speculative projections.

For the trade, the broader signal here is worth noting. The fact that Rioja brand equity can be isolated, valued and transacted independently of physical winemaking assets confirms what buyers and sommeliers already know from the floor: in Rioja, name recognition translates directly into commercial velocity. Labels with decades of restaurant list and retail shelf history carry real weight with consumers even when the underlying corporate structures fail.
The outcome of the auction will be worth watching. If acquired by established producers, these labels may be repositioned within broader distribution networks. If bought by financial investors or international operators, they could form part of a heritage brand revival strategy. Either way, Rioja’s underlying appellation credibility — its classification system, its century of D.O. regulation, its old-vine vineyards — remains the foundation that makes any of these brand names worth bidding on at all.
