Bar Summit 2026

Rioja Is Coming to the Bar Summit — Here’s What Trade Professionals Need to Know

The conversation around Rioja has been shifting. Not the quality — that’s never been in question — but the story. A region that spent decades earning its prestige through patience and aging tradition is now making a compelling case for its range, its versatility, and its relevance to a new generation of bar and beverage professionals. The 2026 USBG Bar Summit is the next room where that conversation happens. And Rioja will be front and center.

A Premier Gathering for the Bar and Beverage Community

The United States Bartenders’ Guild Bar Summit is the bar industry’s marquee annual event — a gathering point for the full spectrum of bar, beverage, and hospitality professionals. Veterans and newcomers, sommeliers and bartenders, buyers and educators all share the same floor for two days of tastings, seminars, and the kind of hallway conversations that actually shape what ends up on a menu. This year’s summit takes place April 27–28, 2026, and Rioja Wines is proud to be a featured sponsor.

Rioja’s presence here isn’t incidental. It’s a signal. Rioja isn’t just a dinner table category anymore — it belongs in the hands of the people shaping what gets poured across every kind of venue and occasion.

Monday, April 27: The Rioja Lounge

Start the week in the Rioja Lounge, where more than eight Rioja wines will be available to taste in an open, relaxed setting. No agenda, no rush — just the opportunity to work through a range of styles and aging expressions at your own pace.

This is the kind of tasting that rewards curiosity. Come ready to explore beyond what you already know. Move between Joven and Gran Reserva. Look for white and rosé Rioja alongside the reds. Let the breadth of the category do the talking. The Lounge is the ideal warm-up for what follows on Tuesday.

Tuesday, April 28: The Seminar You Don’t Want to Miss

New Rioja: Classic Roots & Modern Pour of Spain’s Finest Wine Region
Presented by Robin O’Connor, Certified Rioja Educator
1:30–2:30 PM | The Pavilion Hub at Convene, 14th Floor

This is the editorial centerpiece of Rioja’s Bar Summit presence, and it earns that billing. Certified Rioja Educator Robin O’Connor brings the kind of practical, trade-applicable expertise that goes well beyond a regional overview. The session explores the central tension that defines Rioja right now: a region with deep, century-old aging traditions that is actively and deliberately reimagining what modern Spanish wine can be.

Rioja = Tradition + Innovation. That’s not a tagline — it’s the actual framework for understanding where the category is headed and why it matters to your program.

What “New Rioja” Actually Means for the Trade

The phrase “New Rioja” can sound like marketing shorthand. It isn’t. For trade professionals, it points to a set of real, commercially relevant shifts worth understanding:

  • Beyond Tempranillo. Rioja has always grown Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, and a range of white varieties — Viura, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca — but the trade has been slow to tell those stories. That’s an opportunity. As Forbes recently noted, Rioja is more than Tempranillo, and the trade should take note.
  • White and rosé Rioja. These are underutilized on wine lists relative to their quality and price point. Aged white Rioja in particular is one of the category’s best-kept secrets — and a genuine conversation-starter with guests.
  • The classification system as a selling tool. Joven, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva — this tiered aging framework is one of the clearest quality narratives in the wine world. It gives your team a straightforward story to tell and gives guests a reliable way to navigate a list.
  • A category with critical momentum. Wine Spectator named Rioja its 2025 Wine Value of the Year. The region’s centennial milestone reinforced its global standing. These aren’t minor footnotes — they’re the kind of credibility markers that make conversations with buyers and guests easier.
